Pfizer's blockbuster drug Celebrex is out of the hands of regulators because it's the only over-the-counter painkiller that the Food and Drug Administration is expected to allow to boost sales of the drug.
The drugmaker is also to be allowed to sell off its animal health unit, which it acquired in 2012, to rival Pfizer's on March 1. The drug's maker, Pfizer Inc., said it is considering allowing the unit to sell off. The company said it would also be buying shares of the firm that owns the animal health unit. Pfizer's shares have fallen more than 10 percent since the start of the first quarter of this year and are expected to fall another 10 percent next year.
The FDA is set to announce the final decision on Celebrex on Thursday. The agency also will decide whether to allow the drug to be sold over-the-counter, as the company said that the drug is a new addition to the existing Pfizer franchise. In addition to the animal-health sales, Pfizer also said it will make changes to its consumer marketing division and the Food and Drug Administration will review the drug's label.
Pfizer shares fell 0.3 percent last week, down slightly from a low of $24.32 in early November. The market closed at $26.35 in the first quarter of 2010, down 2 percent from its closing high of $32.88 in October. The company also said it is in the process of finalizing a marketing alliance with GlaxoSmithKline, the pharmaceutical company that acquired the unit in 2012. The alliance, which will include the merger of GlaxoSmithKline and Johnson & Johnson, has been expected to be announced in due course.
Last week, the FDA approved Celebrex, a painkiller that combines two drugs, along with an anti-inflammatory for the joint pain of arthritis and muscle pain. Pfizer's Celebrex will be the first of its type of drug that is approved to treat pain in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and acute pain in the general population. It was originally developed as an arthritis pain treatment but is still the second-biggest drug on the market after naproxen.
The FDA has said the drug's side effects are not well understood and, in some cases, may be linked to the drug itself. The FDA said it has determined that the side effects of the drug are "significantly less common than reported" in people who take the drug. Pfizer is also to allow its animal health unit, Bevacizum, to sell off the company's animal health unit to rival Pfizer. Bevacizum is also to be acquired by the company, which is expected to own the animal health unit. Bevacizum has about 3,000 employees and is a subsidiary of Bevacizum Animal Health Inc., the company that owns Bevacizum Animal Health Inc. Bevacizum's animal health division is owned by a group of about 50 employees.
Pfizer is scheduled to make a decision on Bevacizum in a press release Wednesday. The announcement comes after the company said it would make a decision on whether or not to make the move to sell the animal health unit. The company also announced the addition of a new brand name for Bevacizum. Bevacizum has been sold in the United States since 1999, and has more than 20,000 employees.

CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE contains Celecoxib which belongs to group of medicines called Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is used in adults to manage osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease), rheumatoid arthritis (inflammatory disease of joints), ankylosing spondylitis (chronic back pain), acute pain and primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is also used to manage juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (in children aged 2 years and above).
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in patients allergic to Celecoxib, sulfonamides, aspirin and/or other NSAIDs. It is also not recommended for use in patients with/had a history of an ulcer in stomach/intestines, bleeding in stomach/intestines, blood circulation problems (such as peripheral arterial disease), red itchy welts, inflammatory disease of the intestines (such as ulcerative colitis/Crohn’s disease).
The medicine is also not indicted for use in patients suffering from lung problems (such as asthma), heart diseases (such as heart failure, recent heart attack, heart block), severe liver disease (such as advanced hepatic insufficiency) and/or kidney disease (such as advanced renal insufficiency).
Before taking CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you have diabetes, raised blood pressure, increased cholesterol, signs of fluid retention (such as swollen ankles and feet) and/or hyperkalemia (increased potassium level in blood).
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in pregnant and breast-feeding women.
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged 2 to 17 years) to manage only juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and is advised to be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years/above) after consulting the doctor.

Celebrex 200mg capsule contains the active ingredient Celecoxib. It belongs to the family known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), and specifically a sub-group known as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors. It is used in adults for the relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. In conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, excess production of prostaglandins by your body can lead to pain and inflammation. This medicine works by decreasing the production of prostaglandins, effectively reducing pain and inflammation.
Do not take Celebrex 200mg capsule if you are allergic to Celecoxib or any of its ingredients. Inform your doctor if you had reactions to sulfonamide medicines, suffer from ulcers or bleeding in the stomach or intestines, or experienced adverse reactions to NSAID medications like aspirin. Before starting the treatment, inform your doctor because it is recommended to not take this medicine if you are pregnant or are breastfeeding. Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver or kidney disease, have inflammatory intestinal conditions, or have heart-related issues such as heart failure, heart disease, or circulation problems.
