Pfizer, the maker of a drug widely used by millions of American patients, says it has reached a deal to buy $40 million worth of generic drugs from the drug company for $35 million and make it available to U. S. patients under a $10 billion offer, according to a press release from the company.
The deal follows an agreement with the maker of the painkiller Celebrex last July, though Pfizer says that it is not disclosing the deal to consumers.
The two drugs are both approved for uses in the U. but have a much lower price than some generics.
Pfizer's deal with Pfizer is contingent on an agreement that the U. government will pay Pfizer for the drugs, a $10 billion deal that could close early next year, according to the release.
The pharmaceutical giant has been fighting an effort by drugmakers to get its drugs to patients in the U. S., although the U. Food and Drug Administration has said it is not aware of any deal.
Patients in the U. are expected to pay about $10 a month to treat their conditions. In April, the FDA said it expected to issue a warning that the drug could raise the risk of serious side effects, including heart attacks.
While the generic version of Celebrex is considered more effective in treating arthritis pain than the brand-name drug, there is a difference between the two. The brand-name drug, known as Vioxx, has been available only with a generic version since it was approved in 1999.
In April, the FDA said it was considering whether to issue an alert to patients who were prescribed Celebrex to help them manage their arthritis pain, which is caused by an excess of pain medication. The agency did not say how many patients were taking the medication.
The drug company said it plans to file a petition with the FDA asking it to reconsider the FDA's decision to issue a warning.
The drug, known as COX-2 selective COX-2 inhibitors, has been available in the U. since 1997. The drugs that the FDA has approved for use in the U. include the arthritis drug Rheumatoid Arthritis (also known as RA), the heart drug Acetaminophen and the cancer drug (breast cancer) Xarelto. In the U. S., Celebrex is the only drug FDA has approved for the treatment of arthritis in adults.
The company said the FDA said it was not aware of any deal between Pfizer and the drugmaker.
"Pfizer is committed to the safety and well-being of patients by ensuring that their products and the availability of generic drugs is safe and effective," according to the company's release. "We look forward to working with our partners and distributors to ensure the continued availability of these essential medications in the U. S."
The FDA has not disclosed when it will issue a warning about the drug.
Pfizer says it has made a strategic decision to make the drug available to all U. patients and it has been given more flexibility in how it deals with a potential threat to consumers.
Pfizer, whose maker is in a class of drugs known as Cox-2 inhibitors, will be the last company to go public in the next three years to market the new drug.
Pfizer said that it is not disclosing the deal to consumers.
In April, Pfizer's U. head of research and development, Edward Jones, said the company would seek a license from the National Institutes of Health to produce the drugs, but it was not disclosing the deal.
Pfizer spokeswoman Mariann Caprino said the company is working on a contract to sell its new drug.
Pfizer CEO Ian Read said the company was not aware of the deal. The drugmaker did not immediately return a call for comment.
